“You Can’t Solo Travel! It’s Too Dangerous” – Debunking the Myths
“You can’t solo travel.” “It’s too dangerous!” “Are you insane?! You’ll get kidnapped.” “Women shouldn’t do that.”
Sound familiar? When I told my loved ones I was going to backpack around Europe alone, their reactions were filled with fear and disbelief. No one in my family had ever done anything like this, and finding someone in our network who had was nearly impossible. To them, I was the reckless dreamer taking an unnecessary risk. Spoiler alert: I knew I could do it if I planned well—and so can YOU.
I meticulously planned a three-month, open-ended trip because I wasn’t sure how long my savings would last. My itinerary was so detailed that anyone could’ve followed my documents and taken my trip for me! I did this partly for my worried family’s peace of mind. Guess what? They never even checked it! That was my first lesson: plan for yourself, not for others—because life continues while you’re out exploring the world.
Fast forward to today, I’ve solo traveled to over 20 countries and no longer worry about making people comfortable with my travel choices. If you’re thinking about taking your first solo trip, here’s how to make it a success.
Step 1: Choosing Your Destination
When it comes to choosing your destination, you’ll want to consider more than just the beauty of a place. Think about your goals for the trip—whether it’s adventure, relaxation, cultural immersion, or something else entirely. Here are some extra considerations:
- Travel Restrictions: Always check for any visa requirements, COVID restrictions, or other regulations that may affect your travel plans.
- Language Barriers: While some countries may speak your language or have great tourist support, others might be more challenging. Consider learning a few basic phrases in the local language, especially for non-English speaking regions.
- Accessibility: How easy is it to navigate your chosen destination? Will you be able to easily get around, or will you need to rely heavily on public transportation or taxis?
Step 2: Budgeting & Saving
Having a realistic budget is one of the most crucial aspects of solo travel. To set yourself up for financial success:
- Track Your Spending: Use apps like Mint or a simple spreadsheet to keep track of your savings and expenses. Set a specific savings goal and break it down into smaller milestones.
- Budget for Emergencies: It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of travel, but always set aside a portion of your budget for emergencies.
- Consider Travel Deals: Look for deals on flights, hotels, and activities. Websites like Skyscanner, Secret Flying, and Airbnb can help you find discounted rates.
Step 3: Booking Flights & Accommodations
Booking your flight and accommodation early can help ensure you get the best deals. Here’s what you need to keep in mind:
- Flights: Use tools like Google Flights, Skyscanner, Scotts Cheap Flights and Pomelo to track flight prices and find the best times to book. Be flexible with your travel dates if you want to save money. Consider booking flights with a layover as they can often be cheaper.
- Accommodations: Once you’ve chosen your destination, you’ll need a place to stay. Hostels are often great for solo travelers because they offer a social atmosphere and the chance to meet new people, check out HostelWorld to book a great hostel. If you prefer more privacy, check out Airbnb or budget hotels. Don’t forget to read reviews, particularly from solo travelers, to ensure your safety.
- Consider Travel Insurance: Book travel insurance as part of your trip. It protects you against flight cancellations, medical emergencies, and lost luggage.
Step 4: Safety Tips & Overcoming Fears
Solo travel is empowering, but it can also bring up some fears. Here’s how to stay safe and overcome those worries:
- Research Local Safety Tips: Before you travel, research the local safety situation. What neighborhoods should you avoid? Are there any cultural customs or laws you need to be aware of? Check websites like the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisory or local tourism boards.
- Stay Connected: Share your itinerary with a friend or family member, and check in regularly to update them on your whereabouts.
- Practice Situational Awareness: Always be aware of your surroundings. If you’re in a new place, avoid staring at your phone or getting lost in a map while walking. Keep your valuables close and stay vigilant.
- Self-Defense: Consider taking a self-defense class or carrying self-defense tools like pepper spray or a personal alarm. These can help you feel more confident while traveling solo.
- Overcome Fears: Many people fear the unknown, but remember—confidence comes with preparation. Stay calm, trust your instincts, and remind yourself why you wanted to travel solo in the first place. Embrace the excitement of exploring the world on your own terms!
Step 5: Packing & Preparing for the Trip
Packing smart and preparing for your trip will make everything run smoother:
- Pack Light: Choose versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched. You’ll want to pack light enough to be mobile but still have everything you need. Consider packing cubes to keep things organized.
- Travel-Friendly Security Gear: Pack a portable door lock like Addalock, an RFID wallet to protect your cards, a personal safety alarm, and a multi-tool (like a tactical pen). These will help you feel safe and secure in any situation.
- Health Essentials: Bring a small travel first-aid kit with basic medical supplies. Don’t forget to bring any medications you need, and make sure to have extra in case of delays. A water bottle with a built-in filter is also helpful in countries with questionable tap water.
- Documents: Carry both physical and digital copies of your passport, travel insurance, tickets, and emergency contacts. Keep them separate in case of loss or theft.
- Travel Apps: Download helpful apps like Google Maps, Google Translate, Xe (currency exchange app) and any local transport apps for the area you’re visiting. Having these at your fingertips can make navigating easier.
By focusing on these areas, you’ll be well-prepared for your first solo trip. With the right mindset, planning, and preparation, you’ll be ready to create unforgettable experiences on your own terms!
